5 out of 5 stars Shatterproof is right!   April 9, 2010

My husband loves his morning coffee, but we have a terrible time with breaking glass carafes. After breaking the carafe that came with his french press, I was ready to banish homemade coffee.

Then I saw this shatterproof plastic one on amazon. I got it, hoping it would be the right size, hoping it wouldn't affect taste, hoping it really was shatterproof.

The carafe fits our french press perfectly. It can go through the dishwasher, and it has survived a couple of falls. We've had it around two months now, and it still looks brand new. It's used daily.

My husband is a bit of a gourmet when it comes to coffee, and if this affected taste at all, he would not be using it.

Couldn't find this one at a store. Thank goodness for Amazon. I bought this plastic one as a back up our glass beaker. Won't have to worry about breaking this one. That's a very good things. Very satisfied!

4 out of 5 stars Has held up for almost 2 years...   April 14, 2010

I opted for the "shatterproof" model when I bought my first Bodum; not quite understanding at the time that their "polycarbonate" meant "plastic" -- so it wasn't as "elegant" as the French press coffee-makers I had seen around. But given the number of glass drip carafes we've gone through before I went to press coffee, I wasn't too disappointed. It's held up very well, especially considering that I grind my coffe myself and do it way too fine, so it takes extra *oomph* to get the press down! It is time for a replacement now, since my original has developed stress cracks radiating from the center bottom. It's not yet affecting it's function, but I'm afraid it's a matter of time... It's been through the dishwasher, though, countless times; and has probably hit the floor once or twice!

2 out of 5 stars Did not fit my Bodum french press   March 20, 2010

Unfortunately I had to return this product- it appeared to be the same size as my previous carafe, however, it seemed slightly wider (perhaps because of the plastic shatterproof construction)- so it simply would not nestle well into the base that I had, the metal base did not allow the plastic to slide as well as the glass one that I had- oh well. Otherwise it seemed fine if it would have fit.

2 out of 5 stars Shatterproof? Yes, but...   July 23, 2010

I've had this item less than a year, and it has developed cracks that run the depth of the plastic and allow coffee to seep out. The leaking isn't consistent, for whatever reason, but the cracks are there, and deep.

The holder I have is an older plastic model, and the fit is fine, in contrast to what some other folks have found. The leaks are annoying, and I wonder how long it will be before it's wholly unusable.
