Summary of review:
- Doublesight DS-90U, 9" screen with 1024x600 resolution
- 65% more screen area than 7" monitors
- Good for reading text (docs, pdfs) and browsing webpages (much better than 7" 800x480 monitors)
- Easy install. Windows 7 driver available on manufacturer website. Works flawlessly with Win7 as both extended or duplicate display
- Works fine on my HP laptop off of a single USB port
- Both power and video are obtained via USB
- Detachable stand allows vertical adjustment and tilt
- Hard plastic cover that snaps over front of monitor protects screen during transport
- Super portable
- Only minor con is that monitor is inherently a CPU-hog
- If you value form over function, you may want to check out the Mimo 710-S, which has a nifty built-in sliding stand/cover. Unfortunately, they're currently only available with 7" screens.
First off, let me just qualify my ratings for this monitor by acknowledging that this is a very niche gadget. If the idea of paying $[...] for a relatively tiny auxiliary display sounds ridiculous, then this product is not for you. Otherwise, if such a device sounds useful, and you can get over the price tag, then I highly recommend the Doublesight DS-90U.
Note that there's also a 7" version of this product (model DS-70U), but it's only 20 bucks cheaper, so I don't really think it's a good value considering you get 65% more screen area with the 9" version (21" sq.in. vs 35 sq.in.). The approximate screen dimension for the DS-70U is 6" x 3.5", while the DS-90U is approximately 7.75" x 4.5".
Note also that the aforementioned Samsung and Mimo monitors are 7", and as far as I could find, those companies do not offer 9" versions. Moreover, with the larger 9" screen, you're also getting higher resolution at 1024x600 (vs 800x480 on all of the 7" monitors). The higher resolution will allow you to comfortably view webpages and pdfs without having to scroll so much.
Installation of the Doublesight DS-90U was a snap. I'm currently using it with Windows 7. The Win7 driver was not on the installation CD that came with the monitor, but you can download it from the Doublesight website. Considering Win7 was officially released to the public less than a week ago, it says a lot that the company already had the driver up for download.
The monitor is entirely powered and gets its video signal via USB. The cable has dual USB plugs in case a single USB port doesn't provide enough power. However, on my HP laptop, the monitor works flawlessly off of a single USB port. If you find yourself needing 2 ports though, unless your ports are less than 8" apart, you'll need a USB extension cable.
I'm currently using the monitor with a 12.1" tablet notebook. It's great being able to put the notebook into tablet mode and take notes on it while having a document up on the DS-90U. Despite its small size, text is crisp and easily legible. Also, to reiterate, the 1024x600 resolution actually makes navigating websites and viewing pdfs non-tortuous (vs the 800x480 you get with the 7" monitors). As I alluded to before, these are the kind of things I actually use the DS-90U for, and really it's great for that purpose. For those that own more recent netbooks with 1024x600 native resolution, you'll be right at home.
Also, the viewing angles on the DS-90U are about on par with my Samsung NC-10 netbook, which is to say very narrow but more than practical considering how it's used. Also, range of brightness is very good (max brightness is actually somewhat blinding), and the screen is easily viewable in direct light.
The DS-90U's detachable stand allows vertical adjustment and tilt of the monitor. For ultra-portability, the monitor has a built-in kick-stand, so you can leave the detachable stand at home; however, when using the kickstand, you can't raise or lower the monitor and it makes the whole setup look rather amateurish (i.e., think digital picture frame). Besides, the detachable stand folds up neatly and compactly, so there's really no reason not to carry it along. Also, the monitor comes with a hard plastic cover that snaps onto the front of the monitor and fully protects the screen.
Finally, it should be noted that these kind of monitors that grab and compress video via USB are resource (CPU) hogs, and the DS-90U is no different. To give you an idea of what to expect, on a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo (slow by today's multimedia standards), watching a youtube video on the DS-90U uses about 30% more CPU compared to watching it directly on the laptop screen. Really though, unless you're trying to run multiple multimedia apps concurrently, you probably won't even notice that your CPU is working harder (and you paid a lot of money for all that extra processing power that would otherwise go idle, so might as well use it).
Anyway, again, if you're in the market for an ultra-portable USB mini-monitor, I would highly recommend the Doublesight DS-90U, particularly over smaller 7" models. Just keep in mind that the main benefits of these types of monitors is that they don't require a standard video port and that they're very compact and extremely portable. If these aren't benefits that would be useful to you, then there are cheaper, better alternatives.
Now Mac compatible! December 9, 2009 Blue Tooth (Rochester, NY) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had been looking at the 7" usb monitors but decided they were too small to be truly useful so I decided to give this a try. The first review ("Great little monitor") was very helpful but I was a little concerned that there wasn't a lot of evidence that it worked with my macbook pro. The monitor is simple but well designed and functional with a very useful cover for the display that comes in handy when carry it in my laptop bag. The software supplied in the box doesn't include drivers for Macs or Windows 7. I went to the displayLink to find a driver but it didn't work so I looked in their forums and found out that DoubleSight had their own version of the drivers and had just released drivers for this display for Mac and Win 7. That did the trick and it has worked perfectly since. The size is very handy and, in addition to the display that screws on, there is a little stylus-like attachment that stores in a silo on the monitor and fits in different holes on the back of display to support the display in portrait or landscape mode when just standing on a desk.
I tried running video on the display while I was running a few other applications. It was smooth which I was pleasantly surprised to see. The monitor is also sufficiently bright (and adjustable) and only requires a singe usb port to power. Viewing angle is a bit narrow but not bad since I am the only person looking at it.
Overall, the product has exceeded my expectations. It integrates fully with the displays system preferences panel and required not further tweeking once the driver was installed. This is just was I was hoping it would be.
Awesome buy March 21, 2010 E. Oosterbaan (Texas, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The price is great and the picture quality is just as great. I was using this as an extended desktop for my computer but at the moment I have it mounted in my car as a modile pc, clean look (not ghetto). I am using Windows 7 so I did had to go on the website to download the proper driver. It is great that there is compatibilty available though--Windows and all their versions....--after downloading that, it is easy to use. Also great for looking along with someone on their computer as a teaching tool. I was doing some excel stuff at work and I was able to work more easily with my partner without having to crane my neck to see his screen.
Very Useful and USB powered!
Great second monitor March 23, 2010 Scott C. Rhinehart (Canon, GA United States) This monitor works great right out of the box! Nice compact form does not take up too much valuable desk space. This is the perfect second monitor.
Great Product works better then expected April 28, 2010 J. Peters (Seattle, WA) I bought this for my MacBook (Intel Core 2 Duo) it works from Both MacOS 10.6, and Windows 7 Book Camp. I also run Windows 7 in VMware Fusion 3 and Parallels Desktop 5 on top of OSX. VMware draws on the monitor slow with Aero turned on but fine with a basic theme. Parallels can run Aero on the monitor just fine. I currently run VMware on my main display and extra mac programs on the extra display. Watching Movies and dragging windows works great, it does tax the CPU but with Duo core I can only tell with a monitor, as it runs great.
